Where To Start…

With so many different standards, it can be hard to determine which ones are best for your business. While some are industry-specific, many of the most popular standards are generic and can be implemented into an organization no matter what sector it is involved with. A quick guide of the popular standards and certification as follows:

> Quality Management System

MS ISO 9000 family of standards represents an international consensus on good quality management practices. It consists of standards and guidelines relating to quality management systems and related supporting standards.

MS ISO 9001:2015 is the standard that provides a set of standardized requirements for a quality management system, regardless of what the user organization does, its size, or whether it is in the private, or public sector.

> Environmental Management System

The MS ISO 14000 family addresses “Environmental management”.  This means what the organization does to:

    • Minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and to
    • Achieve continual improvement of its environmental performance.

The MS ISO 14000 family addresses various aspects of environmental management.

> Information Technology

MS ISO/IEC 27001 is one of the standards from Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) Family of Standards which specify on ISMS Requirements.

MS ISO/IEC 27001:2007 is designed to ensure the selection of adequate and proportionate security controls that protect information assets and give confidence to interested parties which aim to ensure the security in preservation of confidentiality, integrity and availability of information; in addition, other properties such as authenticity, accountability, non-repudiation and reliability can also be involved.

> Risk Management

This Malaysian Standards provides principles and generic guidelines on principles and implementation of risk management. This standard can be applied to any public, private or community enterprise, association, group or individual. This standard is generic and not specific to any industry or sector but relevant to all. This standard will facilitate enforcement agencies and other relevant interested parties to comply, implement and continuously improve a framework whose purpose is to integrate the process for managing risk into the organization’s overall governance, strategy and planning, management, reporting processes, policies, values and culture.

> Energy Management System

MS ISO 50001:2011 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system, whose purpose is to enable an organisation to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.

This standard specifies requirements applicable to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation and reporting, design and procurement practices for equipment, systems, processes and personnel that contribute to energy performance.

> Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

LED products need proper standards to ensure the safety, and to measure the performance of LED-related control gear, lamps, modules and luminaires.

> Halal Food: Production, Preparation, Handling And Storage

MS 1500:2009 contains practical guidelines for the food industry on the preparation and handling of halal food (including nutrient enhancers). It aims to set the ground rules for food products or food businesses in Malaysia. It will be used by JAKIM as the basis for certification whilst other requirements will also be taken into account to complete the certification process.

> MESTI
