KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), being the nation’s trade promotion agency, should employ more big data to help local entrepreneurs produce the right kind of goods and services needed by the world.

“Information is what drives the economy. You have more information, the better you are because data is what contributes towards decision-making,” he said in a recent interview with BERNAMA in Kota Kinabalu in conjunction with the impending publication of a commemorative book celebrating MATRADE’s 25th anniversary.

A new United Nations report warns that the potential benefits to developing countries of digital technologies are likely to be lost to a small number of successful first movers who have established digital monopolies. 

According to the Trade and Development Report 2018 (TDR 2018), subtitled ‘Power, Platforms and the Free Trade Delusion’, while developing countries need to invest more in digital infrastructure, they must also address the ownership and control of data and their use.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Based on the State of Households 2018 report released by the Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) on Monday, the income gap between households in the urban and rural areas is quite significant.

The report said that the total household income in most rural areas was lower than the national median of RM5,228, as compared to urban households, which were up to 1.7 times higher.

MED to meet Japanese govt on Asian aircraft

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development (MED) is planning a meeting with the Japanese government on a proposal to build an Asian aircraft.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof said Malaysia would contribute in terms of manufacturing components for the proposed Asian aircraft.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) --  Sabah aims to increase the contribution of its industrial sector to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 35 per cent in 20 years from 7.5 per cent currently.

State Ministry of Trade and Industry Deputy Permanent Secretary Tseu Kei Yue said growth is expected in several areas, including the resource-based downstream industry, particularly palm oil and oil and gas.

PSK platform maklumat untuk PKS

KUALA LUMPUR 15 Okt. - Kementerian Pemba­ngunan Usahawan (MED) melancarkan Pusat Sehenti Keusahawanan (PSK) yang berkonsepkan pusat fizikal sebagai platform penyebaran maklumat mengenai usahawan serta perusahaan kecil dan sederhana (PKS).

Menteri Pembangunan Usahawan, Datuk Seri Mohd. Redzuan Md. Yusof berkata, PSK berperanan sebagai pusat penyimpanan data, mendapatkan maklum balas serta memberi khidmat nasihat kepada usahawan di seluruh negara terutama di Lembah Klang.
